Every heavy vehicle disc caliper has a model code cast or stamped into the housing, usually on the mounting bracket or the back of the caliper body. This is the most reliable way to identify it. Codes like SB7000, SN6000, Pan 19.1, or HTD-430 point straight to the correct kit family, so it's worth writing the full code down rather than trusting your memory at the parts counter.

2. Confirm the piston bore diameter. 

Some caliper families share a model name across different piston sizes. Measuring the bore, or checking the part number stamped alongside the model code, stops you ordering a kit with seals that don't match your piston.

3. Check the axle rating and OEM part number. 

Cross-reference the axle build plate against the caliper manufacturer's OEM part number where you can. This matters most on mixed fleets running several axle brands, where two trucks can look identical from the yard but carry different brake hardware under the mudguard.

4. Confirm left hand vs right hand fitment. 

Many caliper repair kits are handed, particularly where the bleed nipple or adjuster sits on one side. Ordering the wrong hand is one of the more common reasons parts come back to us, and it's an easy thing to check before the parts leave the counter rather than after they're back at the workshop.

The most frequent error is matching by vehicle badge instead of by caliper stamping, on the assumption that a particular truck always means a particular caliper type. Axle and brake suppliers change across production runs and after axle replacements, so the badge on the bonnet tells you a lot less than the code on the caliper itself.

Mixing OEM and aftermarket seals in the same kit is another one. Seal compounds and boot geometry are engineered as a matched set for a reason. Swapping in individual components to save a few dollars is a common cause of early seal failure, and it usually shows up as a comeback within a few months rather than a clean, multi year service life.

Ordering by weight rating alone is a related trap. Two axles rated to the same load can still run different caliper families depending on the manufacturer and build year, so weight rating narrows the search without finishing it. You still need the stamped code to be sure.
